What does SPF mean and how does it protect my skin?
SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. It indicates how well a sunscreen protects skin from UVB rays, the main cause of sunburn. SPF does not measure UVA protection, so choose a broad-spectrum product that protects against both UVA and UVB.
What SPF level should I use daily?
Dermatology experts commonly recommend at least SPF 30 for daily use. For extended outdoor exposure, choose SPF 50 or higher.
How much sunscreen should I apply and how often should I reapply?
Apply a generous, even layer to all exposed skin. For the face and neck aim for roughly a nickel-sized amount (or follow the two-finger rule) and don’t forget ears, hairline, and neck. Reapply every two hours during continuous sun exposure and immediately after swimming, toweling off, or heavy sweating.
When in my routine should I apply SPF and can I wear it under makeup?
Apply sunscreen as the final step in your morning skincare routine, after serums and moisturizers and before makeup. If you use a moisturizer with SPF, it should still be the last skincare step. Makeup can be layered over sunscreen once it has absorbed.
What’s the difference between physical (mineral) and chemical sunscreens?
Physical (mineral) sunscreens use zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide to reflect and scatter UV rays and begin protecting immediately upon application. Chemical sunscreens absorb UV radiation and convert it to heat and typically require about 15 minutes to become effective. Choose based on your skin type, sensitivity, and texture preference.
Can I use SPF with active ingredients like retinol, Vitamin C or acids?
Yes. Sunscreen should be worn every morning regardless of the active ingredients in your routine. Many actives increase sun sensitivity, making daily broad-spectrum SPF essential. Retinol and exfoliating acids are typically used at night, followed by SPF use the next morning.
Are sunscreens suitable for sensitive or acne-prone skin?
Yes. Look for formulas labeled non-comedogenic, fragrance-free, or designed for sensitive skin.
