A facial masque is a targeted, treatment-focused product designed to deliver concentrated benefits, such as hydration, detoxification, exfoliation, or calming, in a single application. Unlike daily cleansers or moisturizers, masques are left on the skin for a set time (or overnight if specified) to allow active ingredients to work before being rinsed or removed.

Frequency depends on the type of masque and your skin concerns. Hydrating or calming masques can typically be used 2–3 times per week (some are suitable for nightly use if labeled). Clay or detox masques and exfoliating masques containing enzymes or AHA/BHA acids are best limited to once or twice weekly. Always follow product instructions and adjust based on your skin's response.

Choose a masque based on your primary skin need: hydrating gel or cream masques for dry or dehydrated skin, calming masques for sensitive or reactive skin, clay or charcoal masques for oily or congested skin, and enzymatic or AHA/BHA masques for dullness and uneven texture. Those with combination skin may benefit from using different masques on different areas of the face.

Begin with a clean face. Apply an even layer of masque to the desired areas avoiding the eye and lip area, and leave on for the time specified on the product label. Rinse or remove as directed, then follow with your usual serum and moisturizer. Using a clean tool or spatula helps maintain hygiene and even application.

Only masques specifically formulated and labeled as overnight or sleeping masques should be left on overnight. Leaving rinse-off or exfoliating masques on the skin too long can lead to irritation, dryness, or over-exfoliation. Always follow the product's intended use instructions.

Masques can be used alongside active ingredients, but caution is needed. Avoid using exfoliating or acid-based masques on the same day as strong retinoids or chemical exfoliants to reduce the risk of irritation. If you regularly use active treatments, consider alternating days.

Some masques are formulated specifically for sensitive skin, but not all are suitable. Look for calming ingredients and minimal fragrance, and patch-test before full-use. If you experience redness, stinging, or irritation, discontinue use and seek professional guidance.

Masques complement, not replace, daily moisturizers or professional treatments. While some sleeping masques provide intensive hydration, a daily moisturizer is still important for ongoing barrier support. Professional treatments offer deeper or more targeted results that at-home masques help maintain between visits.

Multi-masking is the practice of applying different masques to different areas of the face to address multiple concerns at once, such as using a clay masque on the T-zone and a hydrating masque on drier areas. Apply each masque only where needed, follow individual leave-on times, and remove as directed.
