under my skin

21When I was 14, I was pulling hair-pins out of huge boxes of hair-cuttings I’d swept up from the salon floor. That was my job—though it sounds like something from a Charles Dickens novel. I’d like some more hair, please. But today, the company I founded, Dermalogica, is simply the favorite skin care brand in the world of professional skin therapy. No brag, just fact.

I’ve always been an optimist. And I’m writing today to say that I hope you are, too. That attitude, more so than any technical brilliance, is what will make you successful. Not to mention happy.

My husband Raymond and I started our company soon after we arrived in America from South Africa (in my case, England via South Africa—I was born and raised in the UK) with very few resources other than our optimism. Our friends and relatives back home thought we were crazy. They still think we’re crazy, but not in quite the same way.

When we got to California, we had to open the business within walking distance because I didn’t have a car.

Today, I wish I could walk to work! Life has been good to me and still is. So this blog is intended as a splash of hope, like our First Lady’s inaugural ensemble of lemongrass-yellow. I’m into fashion, you see. You are what you wear—so wear great skin and a face of happy.
