Mad Men star loves Dermalogica

madmenIn the office, we’re big fans of Mad Men — the fashion, the racy drama (and yes — Jon Hamm — of course).  We were happy to find out that one of its emmy nomitated star’s — Christina Hendricks (aka - Joan) – is a Dermalogica fan!  She’s got great curves, fiery locks, and beautiful porcelain skin.  Her go-to SPF is no other than Dermalogica.

calm down and carry on

jane22Your skin feels tight, hot, itchy, prickly, inflamed.  It look red or blotchy and reacts with painful inflammation to your favourite products.  Even a splash of water may set it off! It’s probably actually what skin care professionals like myself call “sensitized”  … it’s time to calm it down with our new UltraCalming™ product line that will be on Canadian skin centre retail shelves this September!

Truly sensitive skin is technically a genetic condition which is inherited. It may be related to asthma, certain allergies, and other inflammatory responses. Dermatologists state that 50% of their patients experience inflammatory skin conditions which patients describe as “sensitive skin”.

hedgehog1

More likely, this condition is sensitization, which is a response to external factors applied to the skin, and conditions in the environment. The most common of these, causing violent inflammatory reactions, are aggressive medi-spa procedures and exfoliation ingredients. You know, a microdermabrasion / laser lunchtime combo with a glycolic acid chaser.

And, free radicals, sun damage, toxins in the air, including micropollutants in your indoor environment, like fumes from a new carpet, etc., all can antagonize your skin’s immune response, nervous system and other defensive processes to product the blushing, flushing, stinging and other symptoms.  Add stress to the mix and you’ve got a five-alarm face.

The bad new — the skin’s inflammatory reaction, and aggressive procedures which may trigger these reactions, make the skin thinner, more fragile, less elastic, and thus actually may make the skin seem to age faster because it is less resilient.

The good news — the new UltraCalming™ system helps skin chill out, banish irritation, quite down any flare-ups, shield against stress, become more tolerant — good for your skin, and the rest of you, too.

We’re so excited to launch UltraCalming™ in Canada and we’re even more excited that it’s already creating some buzz out there –thanks to our friends in the media!  Can’t wait to get your hands on it?…check back in late August on the store locator section of our website where we’ll have retailers in your area carrying the line flagged with the UltraCalming™ lavender logo.

pop culture: “pop” one a day

jane221Long ago, in a galaxy far, far away, pantyhose, computers, microchips, microwaves, LED watches and digital anything did not exist.

And neither did the Pill.

Oh — about the pantyhose.  It’s true.  There were tights, which were thick, warm, wooly things.  But any sheer fashion hosiery prior to the mid-60s had to be help up by actual garters — either attached to a girdle, which you’re probably too young to even imagine, or to a rather utilitarian, industrial-strength garter-belt.  This wasn’t considered hot stuff.  There simply was no alternative.

OK, back to the Pill.  The birth control Pill was approved by the FDA one half-century ago as of right now! – May 1960. This is a landmark. And through my colleagues and friends at STEP UP WOMEN’S NETWORK (suwn.org), hosted by Bayer Women’s Healthcare, I am in my beloved New York City right now, because I was invited to participate in what is already being hailed as a landmark Round Table Event, all about the impact of the Pill on women’s history! Although the event will not be open to the public, the whole thing will be filmed, so stay tuned.

Guess who’s here for the chat? Uber-iconic-feminist Gloria Steinem, one of my all-time inspirations, will participate in the discussion. Excuse me???

pop-culture1Another empowering aspect to Bayer’s far-reaching campaign is the “Make Your Mark” Facebook contest, where selected women will receive grants to carry out a mission based on their personal goals.  And get this: for an upcoming book of their stories, the winners also will be photographed by another of my heroes, the astonishing Annie Leibovitz, who photographs people differently than anyone else on earth. She’s the one who created the unforgettable image of the nude John Lennon tenderly cradling the fully clothed Yoko on the studio floor. In her decades of work for Rolling Stone, Annie also posed Whoopi Goldberg emerging from a tub of milk, and captured a nude Bette Midler on a bed of thousands of rose petals. You can almost feel their skin in these photos, and a million others – that’s how close her images bring us to her subjects.

Steinem, Leibovitz and I all became who we are in that bubbling, steaming, crackling cauldron of counter-culture called the late 1960s-1970s. And while the place of the Pill in women’s history is still open to some debate (though I find the fact that there is any debate amazing…), there is no doubt that it has had a huge impact upon how women live. Preventing pregnancy, as in the ability to control family-size, and the timing of children, means that women can work more consistently, and gives employers less reason to deny women jobs. This is huge. Like pantyhose and so much else, we now take this for granted.
But ever the hard-liner, Gloria Steinem recently said this about the Pill to Time magazine:

“I don’t walk around saying, ‘Thank you for the vote. I might add, as Susan B. Anthony said, our job is not to make young women grateful. It’s to make them ungrateful so they keep going. Gratitude never radicalized anybody.”

Rock on, Sister G!

coffee talk

jane22

Consider this true story of a friend of mine who has just moved back to LA.  She lived three years in a very rural place — the nearest Starbucks (or Peet’s, or Coffee Bean, etc.) was literally a three-hour drive, one way.

Until then, she had no idea how much she loved coffee, especially designer coffee made by someone else.

So, now that she’s back in the city, she treats herself to a gourmet java of some kind every day.  Usually a cold, sweet, dark Venti Mocha Frappuccino.  It’s really a rather modest indulgence, considering how severely the poor thing was deprived of so many pleasures for so long.

So, this being L.A., there are not one, but two Starbucks in the shopping center near her new house.  One is a big one with couches, newpapers and a bathroom, while the other is a modest kiosk inside a supermarket.  They are approximately 25 human strides apart.

There is often a queue at the bigger Starbucks, so she decided to give the little one a try — and sip her frap as she shops for yogurt and kitty litter.  The first time, the young man at the register became baffled by the single-item transaction.  He undercharged her, then spent the next ten minutes poking at the keypad trying to get the numbers to right themselves, and eventually had to get more money from her.

coffee-talk3The second visit didn’t go much better.  When the same young man handed her a hot cappuccino instead of what she ordered (Venti-Moch-Frap), more consternation ensued, and again she had to fork over another 45 cents.

In both cases, the guy blew it.  We all know that the register has to be, so to speak, right on the money.  But what about the experience of the customer?

In both scenarios, the cashier was at fault.  He could easily have taken  the extra 45 cents, for example, from the “tips” cup that sits audaciously on the counter.  Tips for what, by the way? There is no table-service at Starbucks.

If he were really a savvy sales guy, he would also have given her a free sample of something for her trouble — a coupon, a credit, a crumpet, something.

Instead, she just shrugged, thanked him, and now will be frapping at the other end of the shopping center, where the brisk business ensures that the team is on its barista toes.

The same is true for your skin care experience.  While we know that our products are the greatest and our business model is the greatest, but is our service always the greatest? What was your latest Dermalogica service experience? I dare you to tell.  Oh, go for it. Be brave. Maybe you’ll even get a crumpet.

realer than concealer

jane22

On newsstands April 13, Jessica Simpson will graced the cover of Marie Claire’s May issue sans make-up and sans retouching.  The French editions of this magazine have been onto this no-retouching jag for a while.  Jess is doing it to promote her new initiative “A Beautiful Me,” intended to empower gals to feel good in their own skin.

Sure, I like the idea.  But hang on a minute.  Jess had the good luck to pick parents who gave her killer DNA.  And, may I add, she is 29-years-old.  The weight of the years is still light.  Would she be so willing to go sans retouching at 49 or 59?

Of course, un-retouched pics of the Material Girl herself have also been “accidentally” leaked, and she’s formidable.  Steely.  Definitely resisting the tendency, as noted by art scholar Sir Kenneth Clark, of the female form to resemble a potato by mid-life (thanks, Kenny).

jess_madge
The backlash against this faux-bravery can be felt at sites like thesuperficial.com, where “detouched” celebs are show with blemishes, braces, yellow teeth, cellulite and more with are expertly added INTO the photo for fun.  Worth 1000, a creative online community, currently sponsors a contest of these images as a platform for virtuoso Photoshoppers to show off their technique.

The rest of us have only one recourse, since no one retouches us as we dash through life.  We have to take care of what we have, starting with skin.

First, nourish the skin with a serum as indicated by your Face Mapping(r) skin analysis from a Dermalogica Professional Skin Therapist.  Follow with the moisturizer recommended by your pro, then follow with the Daylight Defense UV protection with suits your skin condition.  Remember that today’s technology allow for the formulation of many kinds of sun protection, both chemical and physical.  So I never want to hear any of that chat about “Ooooh, sunblock makes me breakout.” That’s because you have not consulted a professional and selected the product that makes your skin happy.

Then get out there!  You may not make it onto the cover of a magazine, but healthy skin and a life-plan to keep it that way definitely is good news.
